The Commerce Department on Friday announced the results of its probe, finding that five companies circumvented tariffs on Chinese solar components by going through other countries.
However, these companies will not be subject to the taxes just yet, as President Biden waived solar import tariffs until June 2024.
Supporters of the solar industry nevertheless lamented the results of the probe, saying it would hurt the climate-friendly industry.
“While this decision is narrower than the original petition called for, it will still hurt the solar industry and solar companies’ ability to grow,” Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) said in a statement. “Let me be clear: this misguided decision is going to directly affect our nation’s solar economy.”
Meanwhile, the Biden administration argued in a press release that the delay in implementation “provides U.S. solar importers with sufficient time to adjust supply chains and ensure that sourcing is not occurring from companies found to be violating U.S. law.”
