Webb: Black country for Democrats
How did the Democratic Party get to this point of being the Socialist Democratic Party? Not solely for this reason but their pandering to the black community has become a trap for the party and for black people.
The goal of the Socialist Democrats and the communist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who now leads as the most energetic representative of the party, has always been to co-opt and reconstruct the party. The socialist left within the Democratic Party has been successful and is likely to continue to drag the party further left. This of course begs the question, what can we do about it? The answer lies in the foundation of who we are as a country.
Let’s talk first about the United States Constitution which is a document of common sense, common principles and brilliant in the ability to be amended when necessary, for the better. Now, that may be up for debate at times, as with the 17th Amendment, but the door is still open for further amendment. This is one of the brilliant points of this document.
The United States Constitution does not guarantee your happiness, but it does protect and reinforce your individual rights and therefore your ability to pursue your happiness. This 21st century Socialist Democratic Party tells you they can guarantee your happiness at the expense of someone else. Does this really seem plausible to you?
All the candidates are offering you, the voter, something for free which doesn’t exist. There is always cost and value. At least Sanders is honest when he said in the New Hampshire debate that he doesn’t mind a socialist facing President Trump.
The United States Constitution protects individual liberty. How can you have a true liberty with its risks and potential for great reward if someone else, in this case the government, determines your needs and controls the delivery of them?
Whether it’s health care, jobs and economic opportunity or later in life, retirement, you would think many Americans are not so willing to hand over control of these and many more elements.
The progressive left is a vocal minority with a bigger footprint and effect than their actual numbers. That does not make them any less dangerous. Socialism is appealing to many because it seems perfect in the way it’s presented. In reality no system is perfect, but a better system like capitalism offers you the chance to work to achieve your own success.
There are also cultural issues and differences that challenge our society. It is often a difficult line between liberty, freedom and capitulation to societal changes which can lead to the end of our free and open society which would ultimately result in less liberty.
Do you think that the progressive left sees this? The answer is yes. This is exactly where the progressive left and their socialist comrades want to take this country. What makes socialists more dangerous are many who follow them out of willful ignorance. Simple rule, whether you’re deliberate or ignorant, you’re dangerous either way.
To black people in South Carolina and any particular group to whom the left panders, you are being lied to. In South Carolina, white people represent 68.5 percent of the population and black people only 27.3 percent. To black residents of South Carolina, do you think that your existence is based solely on your community and not the totality of the Palmetto State? If the Democratic primary candidates pander to you, question it, and if they are successful in being elected, will they only govern for you?
Go back to the true core of who we are as a country. Be honest that we have evolved out of dark times and moments to where we are today. This was not an accident but the deliberate effort of most Americans.
The way to keep moving forward is not to go backward to a despotic and failed system in any form of socialism. Or are you, in black country for Democrats and all across the country, afraid of being free and the possibilities of failure or success?
