Did senators forget that Trump Jr. answered the questions already?

According to the special counsel and the Justice Department, the witch hunt is finally over. After an extensive investigation lasting two years, Robert Mueller has determined that no one in or affiliated with the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election. It seems the Senate Intelligence Committee must have missed the memo.

In a stunning move, the committee has subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr., asking him to answer another endless list of questions about, you guessed it, Russia. No competent attorney would allow their client to walk right into this perjury trap, especially not when the client has already testified in front of Congress for over 27 hours in accordance with the express agreement that he would not be called before the committee yet again.

{mosads}Trump Jr. has been as transparent as possible with members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, answering every question that they prepared, staying until they had nothing more to ask, and providing hundreds of thousands of relevant documents. He even voluntarily published his email correspondence about the Trump Tower meeting in order to set the record straight and prove that he has nothing to hide from anyone.

If lawmakers have any additional questions for Trump Jr., maybe they should review the 30,000 documents he submitted and rewatch the nine hours of testimony he gave to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Make no mistake, lawmakers will not do a better job investigating collusion than the special counsel, who interviewed nearly 500 witnesses, issued more than 2,800 subpoenas, and employed a team of 40 agents, analysts, and experts to ensure that no stone was left unturned in the Russia probe.

What questions do lawmakers possibly have left for Trump Jr.? How many hours of additional grilling does he have to go through in order to finally satisfy the committee? If the eldest son of the president truly perjured himself, as some liberal pundits have suggested, Americans would have found out about that long ago through Mueller, who had access to his testimony and showed no hesitation about charging other people with lying to Congress. Michael Cohen just reported to prison for that crime.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell put it best when he called upon his fellow lawmakers to come to their senses. “Two years of exhaustive investigation, and nothing to establish the fanciful conspiracy theory that Democratic politicians and TV talking heads had treated like a foregone conclusion,” he said on the Senate floor. “They told everyone there had been a conspiracy between Russia and the Trump campaign. Yet on this central question, the special counsel’s finding is clear. Case closed.”

It is time for Congress to move on from this manufactured Washington scandal and finally accept the results of the special counsel report for good. Trump Jr. has done his part and already answered all questions.
