Best job searches and fairs in town
Most staffers, lobbyists and press on Capitol Hill are interested in political and communications-oriented jobs. Here are some of the best job search engines and job fairs to check out this spring.
DC Jobs is a great place to go for job postings in the general metropolitan area. The beauty of this site is that it is broken down into different areas of the region, such as Bethesda, Rockville and Georgetown.
The site includes a career events calendar, which is great for those searching to make their next move. An event going on May 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the Corporate Gray “Security Clearance” Job Fair, open only to those with security clearances.
There are also fun facts about D.C. on the website to add to your knowledge of the city when you go to apply for your next job.
Hill Zoo is a great resource for those looking to immerse themselves into all things Capitol Hill. Hill Zoo has a great sidebar of issues going on in and around the Hill, such as the Olympics boycott of 1980 documented in a new book out now.
The site offers plenty of job postings and has main-page highlights. May 13th’s job of the day was a meeting coordinator for a growing D.C. organization.
Hill Zoo also has a “useful links” sidebar, with links to area news organizations such as The Washington Post and The Washington Times. More fun links include “He Said, She Said” movie reviews and a “Life on the Red Line” blog with posts on everything from Thanksgiving hangover tips to the addictive “Craigslist Missed Connections.”
Hill Zoo is your one-stop shop for furthering your career and immersing yourself in everything Capitol Hill.
Journalism Jobs is another great communications-job search engine to visit if you’re searching for a new job or wanting to get into a little freelance work for some extra cash.
Although it doesn’t have a vast an amount of media news, it lets you search for jobs without having to sign up first.
Journalism Jobs also has a pretty decent collection of freelance and telecommuting jobs to choose from as well.
The site also has some interesting links to information, such as reporter salaries for 2008 and good journalism schools.
Media Bistro is a great tool for those interested in furthering their communications and journalism careers. This site has some great tools, including media news and a newer feature: MediaBistro On Demand. This On Demand feature includes short videos from members of the media with tips on things like how to increase site traffic.
It also has a lot of freelance job postings and current course offerings such as “Flash for Journalists” in New York City and “Art of the TV Pitch” in Los Angeles.
Sign up for free and gain access to the site’s vast amount of job postings, including 73 in D.C. alone.
