Anonymous takes on ISIS over Twitter, Facebook

Activist hacking group Anonymous has posted hundreds of Twitter accounts, Facebook pages and email addresses it says are tied to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“ISIS; We will hunt you, Take down your sites, Accounts, Emails, and expose you,” the group said in its post to Pastebin, a frequent repository for hacked content. “From now on, no safe place for you online …”

{mosads}Anonymous declared digital war on all Islamist extremists following the terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo last month, in which attackers with loose ties to ISIS and al Qaeda killed 12 people.

Monday’s posting includes over 800 Twitter accounts, 12 Facebook pages and upwards of 50 email addresses. Most of the Twitter and Facebook pages appear to have been taken down by Anonymous.

“You will be treated like a virus, And we are the cure,” the group said. “We Own The Internet.”

The group reupped its warnings to ISIS and al Qaeda on Friday in a video posted to YouTube.

“We are Muslims, Christians, Jews,” said a robotic voice. “We are hackers, crackers, hacktivists, phishers, agents, spies, or just the guy from next door.”

The collective’s campaign against Islamist extremists has been dubbed “Operating ISIS,” or #OpISIS.

Over a decade old, Anonymous has drawn attention for hacking an array of authority figures, including government agencies, law enforcement officials, major companies and religious institutions.

Often the digital hits are protests against what the group views as some form of oppression or abuse of authority.

In a January YouTube video following the Charlie Hebdo attack, Anonymous turned its attention on Islamist extremists.

“We intend to take revenge in their name, we are going to survey your activities on the net, we are going to shut down your accounts on all social networks,” the group said.
