Facebook’s ‘security checkup’ will soon pop up on your News Feed
Facebook this week unveiled a new “security checkup” feature that will occasionally pop up on users’ News Feed to give tips on better locking down their account.
The feature, which is in testing mode, will show Facebook users exactly which devices are logged into their account and prompt them to change their password.
{mosads}Multiple studies have shown stagnant passwords and allowing multiple devices to stay logged into an account create easy targets for hackers. The most common passwords are still “password” and “123456.”
Prominent online services and social networks have tried to tighten login security as digital defacers and hacktivists increasingly target social media accounts as a way to spread propaganda.
In January, hackers claiming affiliation with the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS) briefly took over the U.S. Central Command’s Twitter and YouTube accounts, tweeting out threats to U.S. forces and messages in support of ISIS.
Most security experts agree the password will eventually become outmoded.
Companies are jockeying to get the public to latch on to password alternatives, such as using a mobile device, wearable ring or fingerprint for identification.
