McCain: Damage from OPM hack could get ‘even bigger’

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told The Hill Wednesday that the mammoth hack of 4 million federal workers’ data could be much worse than previously imagined.

“I hope I’m not betraying anything, but I’ve heard unofficially that the damage is even bigger than was first reported,” said McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Officials have said investigations into the data breach at the Office of Personnel Management are ongoing and that new facts may emerge.

After a briefing with top administration officials Tuesday night, Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.) told reporters, “the scope of the exposure” and “the extent of the damage” were still being investigated.

“I don’t think we can say with any kind of certainty that anyone is beyond impact here,” said Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
