CVS investigating breach of online photo site

Convenience-store giant CVS has shut down its online photo center after a possible security breach may have exposed credit card data.

“As a precaution, as our investigation is underway we are temporarily shutting down access to online and related mobile photo services,” said a statement that has replaced the CVSphoto.com homepage.

{mosads}The company said in-store and CVS.com customers have not been affected.

“Customer registrations related to online photo processing and CVSPhoto.com are completely separate from CVS.com and our pharmacies,” the statement reads. “Financial transactions on CVS.com and in-store are not affected.”

The potential hack comes a week after Wal-Mart Canada revealed it was looking into a similar intrusion into its own online photo center.

As in the CVS breach, Wal-Mart said its in-store and online customers at Walmart.com were not part of the potential breach.

To this point, there’s no evidence the two are related.

CVS has not given any indication of the scale of the breach.

“Customers who provided credit card information for transactions on CVSPhoto.com are advised to check their credit card statements for any fraudulent or suspicious activity and to call their bank or financial institution to report anything of concern,” the company said.
