Social media site Twitter was sporadically down across much of Europe and portions of the U.S. early Tuesday.
The popular micro-blogging service, which has over 320 million active users, confirmed the outages shortly before 4 a.m. ET.
{mosads}“Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter,” the company said. “We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.”
According to DownDetector, a site that tracks Internet sites and mobile apps in real time, users were experiencing the most trouble with Twitter’s website. But the also said Twitter’s smartphone and tablet apps were intermittently unavailable.
Third-party services, such as TweetDeck, seemed to be working in the U.S., but were reportedly delayed or inaccessible elsewhere.
The Associated Press reported this is the third time in five days Twitter has had problems. The company’s website and mobile apps were disrupted for roughly 20 minutes on Friday, and then again for about 10 minutes on Monday.
Thus far, there is no indication the technical issues are being caused by hackers.
On Tuesday afternoon, Twitter said the problem was “related to an internal code change.” Service was restored after the change had been reverted, Twitter said.
In its early days, Twitter was known for its frequent service interruptions, popularizing the “fail whale” image that appeared when the site was down. But over the past few years, the social media platform has improved reliability.
