Poll: Most think they know more about cybersecurity than Trump, Clinton

Americans believe they know more about cybersecurity than President Trump or Hillary Clinton, according to a poll by venture capital firm Blumberg Capital.

The Blumberg 2017 State of Cybersecurity poll seems to indicate people might be overconfident about their own security knowledge. It found that 57 percent of respondents believe they know more than their office IT director.

In addition, 82 percent said they know at least as much about cybersecurity as their friends and 82 percent believe they know at least as much as their mom.

{mosads}People were less quick to say their security chops exceeded last year’s presidential candidates, though a wide majority still did. Sixty-three percent said they knew at least as much as Trump, and 62 percent at least as much as Clinton.

Cybersecurity played a surprisingly major role in last year’s presidential campaign. Clinton was dogged by security questions after the revelation that she maintained a private email server while secretary of State. And hackers breached the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails, leading to a months-long series of leaks that hurt Clinton. Trump delighted in the leaks — at one point saying, “I love WikiLeaks” — and frequently called on Clinton to be tried and jailed for her use of a private server.

The survey polled 1,012 people from Jan. 16-19. The credibility interval was plus or minus 4 percent.

Blumberg Capital holds investments in a number of internet and security companies, including HootSuite.
