Hillary Clinton on Sunday referred to Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election as a “cyber 9/11.”
“I think there a lot more connections that have yet to come to light,” Clinton said Sunday evening in London, according to BuzzFeed News.
The former Democratic nominee said if she had been elected president, she would have called for an independent commission to “get to the bottom of it.”
“We had really well-respected security, intelligence veterans saying this was a cyber 9/11, in the sense it was a direct attack on our institutions,” she said.
{mosads}“That may sound dramatic, but we know that they probed and tried to intrude into election systems — not just the social media propaganda part of their campaign.”
Clinton warned that the Russians are “not done.”
“This is an ongoing threat,” she said.
Clinton made similar comments during an interview that aired Sunday, cautioning that the U.S. should “keep an eye” on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin wants to destabilize democracies in Europe and the U.S. and undermine NATO and the European Union, she said.
“He believes that that will then give Russia a real chance to be dominant, certainly in Europe and certainly along its borders,” she said.
“And that the United States, which he views as his primary adversary, will be weakened.”
She said she thinks Putin was successful in his efforts to meddle in the presidential race, adding that he wants to divide America from within.
“He got some of what he was looking for,” she said.
“He hasn’t gotten everything. But keep an eye on him, because he’s not done.”
There are currently multiple investigations into the Russian election meddling. President Trump has dismissed the Russia probe, referring to it as “hoax” and an excuse by the Democrats for losing the election.
