One dead, one missing after Navy copter crash

The Navy has confirmed that one of four crew members rescued Wednesday died after a military helicopter went down in the Atlantic off the Virginia coast.

The three other crew members are still being evaluated at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and the search for the fifth is continuing.

The helicopter, an MH-53E Sea Dragon, was conducting “routine training operations,” the Navy said, before landing off the Virginia Beach coast near Fort Story. The chopper is assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron Fourteen, based at Naval Station Norfolk Chambers Field.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, and the extent of injuries is not known at this time, the Navy said.
