US warship deployed for Olympics runs aground

The USS Taylor, which was deployed to the Black Sea for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, ran aground last week, the Navy said Tuesday.

{mosads}The Navy’s frigate ship was being inspected for damage after it ran aground while preparing to moor in Turkey on Feb. 12.

The incident occurred at the Turkish port of Samsun, which is roughly 230 miles southwest of Sochi.

The ship was one of two the Navy deployed to the Black Sea to be on standby during the Winter Olympics, which terrorists have threatened to strike.

A senior U.S. military official told NBC News that the ship’s prop was damaged when it ran aground, and it remains in port while the damage is assessed.

The ship is “inoperable for now,” the official said.
