Afghan vet to receive Medal of Honor

President Obama will honor former Army Sgt. Kyle White with the Medal of Honor in a ceremony next month, the White House announced Tuesday.

White will become just the seventh living recipient of the nation’s highest military honor for actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

White, who was deployed in Afghanistan, is being honored for his performance during a 2007 troop movement in mountainous terrain in Aranas, Afghanistan. 

The White House did not provide details of White’s actions, but according to military newspaper Stars and Stripes, he was part of a small group of soldiers who was ambushed during a village meeting.

“There was one shot, you know, down into the valley, and then it was two shots, and then it was full-automatic fire and RPGs … it was coming from multiple directions,” White said, according to the paper.

White was initially knocked unconscious by an explosion, but woke up and made efforts to save members of the U.S.-Afghan group. 

Last month, Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to 24 veterans after an internal review suggested they had been passed over because they were Hispanic, Jewish, or black.
