Security problems slow Benghazi search, says CIA chief Brennan

The search for the culprits responsible for the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, has been slowed due to on-the-ground security challenges, CIA Director John Brennan said on Tuesday.

U.S. law enforcement and intelligence experts and allied countries have worked together for nearly two years to identify the attackers that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, Brennan said in an interview with Fusion television.

{mosads}“This is a challenge. Libya is still beset by a number of security and stability issues,” he said.

He deferred to the Justice Department when asked why no arrests had yet been made.

“Our role in CIA is to make sure we’re able to bring to bear the intelligence that’s going to allow the appropriate law enforcement authorities to bring these people to justice,” Brenann said.

He said the 2012 attack was viewed “early on” as an “assault.

“So whether or not you call it a terrorist attack or an assault or a violent confrontation that unfortunately led to the death of four Americans, it is something that we need to make sure that we are able to get to the bottom of and … bring the people responsible for that to justice,” Brennan said.
