Former DHS chief: Obama made mistakes on ISIS

Former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says the U.S. is “quite late” in going after the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

{mosads}“We are quite late at addressing the problem and there are people who will agree that had we addressed the issue of how do we empower the more moderate opposition to [Syria President Bashar al-] Assad two years ago, ISIS might never have taken off,” Chertoff said in a wide-ranging interview with The Hill.

Chertoff, who ran the Department of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush, said that the U.S. is “safer than we were on 9-11.” However, Chertoff added that the country is “a little less safe than maybe we were two or three years ago because of the rise of ISIS and the regeneration of these groups in the wake of the Arab spring.”
