Six dead in Afghan army base attack
Six Afghan soldiers are dead following a 14-hour assault by insurgents early Friday on a compound in southern Afghanistan, the Associated Press reported.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the assault, which is part of a string of terrorist attacks across Afghanistan in the last 24 hours.
{mosads}On Thursday, a suicide car-bomb killed at least five people, including two British embassy employees. A suicide blast and gunfire also shook the embassy district of Afghan capital Kabul, according to Al Jazeera and NBC News.
The Taliban sent nearly 30 insurgents late Thursday to raid Camp Bastion, located in the southern Helmand province. The 14-hour standoff ensued. Six Afghan soldiers perished defending the base.
The British had controlled Camp Bastion until late October, when it was handed over to Afghan officials as part of the U.S. and NATO ending their combat mission. The transition is expected to be completed by Dec. 31.
Elsewhere in Helmand Friday, suicide attackers killed two police officers, the AP reported. Thirty one people were also wounded in a mosque bombing Friday in eastern Nangahar province.
Although international troops’ official combat mission ends Dec. 31, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani signed bilateral security agreements in September to allow military presence in the country beyond that date.
The decision has prompted almost daily violence from insurgents throughout Afghanistan.
