Taliban kills Afghan troops on military base

Taliban attackers on Saturday killed more than a dozen Afghan soldiers as fighters overran a national army base.

The assault was just one of spate of attacks the group launched in recent days, including two in the heart of the capital city of Kabul. Taliban fighters used a massive car bomb to target a British Embassy convoy, killing a British Embassy security guard and an interpreter, according to the New York Times.

Fighting between Afghan national forces and insurgents entered a third day as attackers try to take control of the army’s main base in the south, Camp Bastion, which was once controlled by NATO forces.

The deadly attack on the army outpost in Helmand province began Friday morning, with insurgents using explosives to battle government forces. A deputy chief of the local government council said that 14 bodies had been discovered in the rubble on Saturday.

The fate of the other 20 estimated soldiers at the outpost is not known.

Meanwhile on the other side of Helmand Province, Taliban fighters continued to wage an attack on national forces stationed at Camp Bastion. The British handed over responsibility for the installation last month.
