GOP chairman on terrorism: ‘More is coming’
Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) on Monday warned that more terrorist attacks like the ones that rocked France are likely to occur in the future.
“More is coming and I think we all know that. We together — those of us who share democratic values — have to work strongly together to keep innocent lives here and in other countries safe,” he told reporters following a Capitol Hill visit by French Ambassador Gerard Araud.
{mosads}The diplomat received a signed a condolence book for the citizens of France in a brief ceremony that was also attended by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.)
The ceremony came the day after thousands of people marched in France to protest a series of terrorist attacks, including the shooting at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The shooting left 12 people dead, with the attackers suspected of having ties to radical Muslim groups.
Corker said he was “glad” the ambassador visited and that lawmakers “joined in expressing deep sympathy for the loss of innocent life.”
“Certainly we’re uplifted by the pouring out that occurred yesterday, by so many countries,” he added.
The White House on Monday admitted it made a mistake in not sending a senior level official to attend the march on behalf of the United States.
“Look the western world together has to combat this,” Corker said. “Everything from robust intelligence gathering — France has one of the best intelligence agencies in the world — and yet this occurred.”
