US-supported Kurds say Turkey shot at forces
The U.S.-supported Kurdish group in northern Syria has accused the Turkish army of attacking its forces in the Syrian town of Tal Abyad.
The People’s Protection Units (YPG) posted on its official Facebook page Monday that the Turkish military shot at its forces two times on Sunday, according to The Associated Press.
No one was injured in the shooting, and the Kurdish forces didn’t return fire, according to the AP.
{mosads}Turkish officials told the AP they had no immediate comment.
In July, the YPG also accused Turkey of shelling the Kurdish-held village of Zur Maghar in Aleppo province. Turkey denied the accusation then.
The YPG and its political arm, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), have become a key part of the United States’ fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Earlier this month, the Turkish prime minister warned the United States against supporting Kurdish forces in Syria. Turkey worries that weapons supplied to the PYD could make their way to the Kurdish group in Turkey, Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which it and the United States consider a terrorist group.
Weapons airdropped in Syria by the United States intended for Arab groups have reportedly been claimed by the Kurds, according to The Washington Post. U.S. officials have denied that and said the weapons were retrieved by Arabs as intended.
