Hollande: US, France, Russia should unify against ISIS
French President François Hollande has requested meetings with President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss combining resources to destroy the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) following last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris.
In an address to a special joint session of the upper and lower house of Parliament, Hollande said he wants “to unify our strength and achieve a result that has been too long in coming,” according to The Associated Press.
{mosads}Hollande made the request shortly after Obama addressed the Group of 20 summit meeting in Turkey, where Obama announced France and the United States have come to an agreement to streamline to process of intelligence sharing.
After Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris killed 129 people, France launched massive airstrikes on the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa.
Obama also vowed to step up the fight against the terrorist group but said sending in ground troops would be a mistake.
Russia has also been conducting airstrikes in Syria. It has maintained it is targeting ISIS, but U.S. officials say the strikes are hitting the rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad.
World leaders have called on Russia to instead target ISIS, calls that are sure to intensify in the wake of the Paris attacks.
