Son of DC restaurateur killed in Afghanistan suicide bombing

The son of a Washington, D.C., restaurateur was among six American troops killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan, his family announced Tuesday.

“My son, Chef Jon’s brother, Staff Sergeant Peter Taub was one of six killed yesterday in Afghanistan,” Bub and Pop’s co-owner Arlene Wagner posted on the popular downtown sandwich shop’s Facebook page. “The restaurant is closed for the rest of this week.”

{mosads}Taub and five others died Monday after an attacker on a motorcycle detonated an explosive during their patrol near Bagram Airfield.

The Taliban claimed credit for the attack, which was one of the deadliest for U.S. troops in Afghanistan this year.

Two other Americans were injured the attack.

Taub, 30, was originally from Pennsylvania. Taub was in the Air Force for eight years. He deployed to Afghanistan in October, according to The Associated Press.

He didn’t want to worry his father and stepmother, so he didn’t tell them he was in Afghanistan, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate reported. They thought he was in Saudi Arabia.

He leaves behind his wife, who is pregnant, and his 3-year-old daughter, according to multiple reports.

The Pentagon has not officially released the names of the victims. But family members and local media have been revealing the identities of those killed. Also among the victims is a New York Police Department detective and a woman who one of the first openly gay service members to get married, Reuters reports.
