US Embassy issues warning after attempted kidnapping in Kabul

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul is warning Americans in the country to use extra caution after an attempted kidnapping of several expatriates.

“The U.S. Embassy Kabul reminds U.S. citizens that the threat of kidnapping and hostage taking continues to be very high,” the embassy said in an emergency message.

The attempted kidnapping happened in Kabul on Monday and targeted a U.S. citizen and several expatriates of other countries, according to the message.

The statement gave no more details on the targets or timing of the kidnapping attempt.

The warning came about a week after an Australian aid worker was kidnapped from the eastern city of Jalalabad.

The emergency message, which was issued Thursday, said Americans should avoid predictable travel patterns while in Afghanistan.

“The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan to review your personal security plans, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal safety, remain aware of your surroundings, monitor local news for updates, and maintain a high level of vigilance,” it added.
