Trump talks with Egyptian president

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday spoke by phone with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a Trump transition official told Reuters.

According to the report, the two leaders discussed matters of regional stability and potential strategies for bringing peace to the Middle East.

The official told Reuters that he did not know whether or not the pair discussed Egypt’s decision to delay a crucial United Nation Security Council vote Thursday.

{mosads}The Security Council was slated to vote on a controversial resolution from Egypt that would have demanded an end to new construction of Israeli settlements.

The measure sparked controversy, with Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly calling on the Obama administration to veto it.

But al-Sisi reportedly decided to delay the vote.

Trump’s talk with al-Sisi Thursday is the latest in a series of discussions he’s had with foreign leaders, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Trump’s conversation with Taiwan’s president was heavily criticized by several U.S. lawmakers, who have accused the president-elect of endangering bilateral relations with China. Trump is the first president since Jimmy Carter to speak with the leader of Taiwan.
