Two detainees transferred from Guantánamo to Algeria
The detainees were the first to leave Guantánamo since a transfer to Canada in September 2012.
{mosads}The Pentagon said in a statement that the detainees were
moved after a “comprehensive review” of their cases.
“The United States is grateful to the Government of Algeria
for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantánamo Bay
detention facility,” the Pentagon said.
“The United States coordinated with the Government of Algeria to ensure these transfers took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.”
The White House had
notified Congress in July that it planned to move the two Algerian detainees.
