Syria asks UN to stop US military strike

The U.S. government is adopting “old stories fabricated by terrorists” in accusing it of chemical weapons use, according to Syria’s envoy to the United Nations.

In a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-mon and Maria Cristina Percevel, the president of the Security Council, the Syrian envoy asks the UN to prevent “any aggression” against Syria, according to Reuters.

{mosads}Envoy Bashar Ja’afari said U.S. evidence of chemical weapons use by Syria is based on fake photos from the Internet. He called on Ki-moon to work to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

President Obama has accused the Syrian regime of being behind a chemical attack that killed more than 1,400 people in the Damascus suburbs, and is asking Congress for approval for military strikes on Syria.

The U.S. argues it has solid intelligence to back up its claims, but Syria — backed by Russia — has argued that if there was a chemical attack it did not come from Syria’s government.

Winning Security Council approval for a military strike against Syria is all but impossible for the U.S. given opposition from China and Russia.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday said the U.S. believes the sarin nerve gas was fired on rebel-held areas.
