McMaster cutting positions created by Flynn: report
President Trump’s new national security adviser is reversing several moves his predecessor Michael Flynn made during his brief tenure, Politico reported Wednesday.
H.R. McMaster authorized the rollbacks in an effort to streamline the National Security Council and eliminated two positions, according to the report — the deputy assistant position supervising the regional desks of the National Security Council and one overseeing transnational matters.
{mosads}“McMaster took a look at them and thought he didn’t need the extra layer. … He wanted to go back the way it had been prior,” an aide told Politico.
Both of the positions were not occupied during the previous administration, but Flynn added them following his appointment just after Trump’s inauguration.
Trump’s acting deputy assistant for transnational issues, Brad Hansell, will reportedly return to his previous post as council’s senior director for transnational threats.
Similarly, Trump’s deputy assistant for regional affairs, Dave Cattler, will resume his work for the office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Flynn was ousted last month after revelations that he misled top White House officials, including Vice President Pence, about the nature of his conversations with Russia’s U.S. ambassador during the transition period. Trump last week tapped McMaster to replace him.
