Army vet charged with joining terrorists in Syria gets plea deal
Harroun had been accused of fighting
with Jahbat al Nusra, an al Qaeda-affiliate that is one of the opposition
groups battling against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime.
The State Department has placed Jahbat al-Nusra on its list
of terrorist organizations.
The charges against Harroun alleged that he traveled to
Turkey last November, crossed the border into Syria and joined with opposition
forces led by al-Nusra and members of the Free Syrian Army in January.
Defense lawyers argued there was confusion over what opposition
group Harroun joined in Syria, according to the AP.
