Navy finds remains of second sailor from USS McCain crash
Navy and Marine divers found the remains of a second sailor who went missing after the USS John S. McCain guided missile destroyer collision earlier this week, the Navy announced Friday.
The remains, found Thursday, were identified as Electronics Technician 3rd Class Dustin Louis Doyon, 26, of Suffield, Conn.
Early Monday, the McCain collided with a Liberian-flagged oil tanker east of the Malacca and Singapore straits. Ten sailors went missing.
Divers previously recovered the remains of Electronics Technician 3rd Class Kenneth Aaron Smith, 22, of Cherry Hill, N.J. The other eight sailors are still missing.
On Thursday, the Navy suspended its search-and-rescue mission in a 2,100-square mile area east of the straits
Divers are continuing to search the flooded compartments of the McCain for remains.
“More divers and equipment arrived overnight to continue search and recovery operations for eight missing sailors inside flooded compartments of the ship,” the Navy said in a press release Friday.
The collision is under investigation to determine its exact cause.
The McCain crash came about two months after the USS Fitzgerald destroyer collided with a Philippine-flagged container ship southwest of Japan. Seven sailors were killed in the Fitzgerald crash.
On Wednesday, the Navy announced it fired Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin as commander of the 7th Fleet, of which both ships are a part. Aucoin was relieved of his command “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command,” according to a press release.
