Putin says sanctions against N. Korea ‘useless and ineffective’
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday dismissed a U.S. push for more sanctions against North Korea, calling them “useless and ineffective.”
“They’ll eat grass, but they won’t abandon their program unless they feel secure,” he told reporters, according to Bloomberg News.
He said the only path is “for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem.”
{mosads}His comments come after North Korean state television said over the weekend that a test of a miniaturized hydrogen bomb that could fit on an intercontinental ballistic missile was a “perfect success.”
President Trump on Sunday warned the U.S. is considering “stopping all trade” with countries doing business with North Korea.
He also tweeted that North Korea’s words and actions “continue to be very hostile and dangerous” to the U.S.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin also said Sunday that North Korea needs to be cut off economically. He said he is drafting a sanctions package “to send to the president for his strong consideration.”
