Pentagon: Navy sailor killed in Red Sea in noncombat incident

The Pentagon confirmed Monday that a Navy sailor was killed during “nonhostile operations” in the Red Sea on Sunday.

Col. Rob Manning, a Defense Department spokesman, said the sailor — who was conducting small-boat operations — was evacuated to a hospital in Aqaba, Jordan. He was pronounced dead about 12:45 p.m. local time.

“There is no current indication of enemy activity or foul play. The sailor died during nonhostile operations,” Manning told reporters at the Pentagon.

{mosads}He did not release the sailor’s name, pending next of kin notification. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The sailor was assigned to the USS Jason Dunham, a guided-missile destroyer based out of Norfolk, Va., that deployed in June, according to the Navy.

The incident in the Red Sea capped off a deadly weekend for the U.S. armed services. A service member was killed and two other were injured on Saturday in an apparent insider attack in Afghanistan.

The service member, Cpl. Joseph Maciel, died from wounds sustained during the attack, according to a Pentagon statement.
