Israeli official: Iran has begun march toward nuclear weapons

Israel’s energy minister on Sunday described Iran’s increase in uranium enrichment as moderate while also accusing Tehran of moving toward a nuclear weapon, Reuters reported.

“Iran has begun – while it is a moderate rise right now – but it has begun to raise, to break out of the uranium enrichment curbs that were imposed on it,” Yuval Steinitz, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet, said on Israeli TV.

{mosads}“It means … that it is brushing off the red lines that were agreed (and) that it has begun its march, a march that is not simple, toward nuclear weaponry.”

Iranian officials announced earlier Sunday that the country will soon increase its uranium beyond the limits set in the 2015 multination Iran nuclear deal.

In May, Iran announced it was quadrupling its uranium production capacity and that it would exceed the stockpile limit by the end of the June.

Tehran gave the European nations still in the deal a July 7 deadline before taking further steps toward increasing uranium enrichment levels.

President Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.
