Iran: Oil tanker sought by US unloaded cargo on Mediterranean coast

An Iranian oil tanker that was wanted by the U.S. docked somewhere along the Mediterranean coast, an Iranian official reportedly said.

“The Adrian Darya oil tanker finally docked on the Mediterranean coast … and unloaded its cargo,” Iranian state news agency IRNA quoted Abbas Mousavi as saying, according to Reuters

The news outlet reported that the vessel had been photographed near a Syrian port.

The Iranian government said last month that the oil had been sold and that the buyer, whom it declined to name, would decide the cargo’s destination. {mosads}

The ship was detained off Gibraltar in July after it was suspected of violating European Union sanctions on Syria. The U.S. has said the ship was helping Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which Washington deemed a terrorist organization earlier this year.

The Trump administration has attempted to prevent sales of Iranian oil. The relationship between the two countries has been strained since President Trump pulled the U.S. out of a 2015 nuclear deal with the country last year.
