US chief of naval operations self-quarantining: reports

The head of U.S. naval operations is self-quarantining after coming in contact with a family member who has contracted the coronavirus, according to multiple news outlets.

Adm. Michael Gilday took a test for COVID-19 on Friday, which came back negative, but he will self-quarantine out of an abundance of caution, an official told CNN on Sunday.

A Defense Department official told CNN that the head of the National Guard Bureau, Gen. Joseph Lengyel, has undergone two tests for possible coronavirus infection, one Saturday that tested positive, and one Sunday that was negative. A third test will be administered on Monday.

“Lengyel tested positive for COVID Saturday afternoon but a subsequent test Saturday was negative. He will undergo a third test Monday morning to confirm his negative status,” said the spokesman.

The news of Gilday’s and Lengyel’s possible exposure to the coronavirus comes as the White House has reportedly increased measures to prevent the spread of the virus among White House officials after a spokeswoman for Vice President Pence, Katie Miller, tested positive for the disease.

Miller was also the chief spokesperson for the White House coronavirus task force, of which Pence is a member. Another Pence spokesperson told The Hill on Sunday that Pence planned to work from the White House for the near future, but was not self-isolating or quarantining.

“Vice President Pence will continue to follow the advice of the White House Medical Unit and is not in quarantine. Additionally, Vice President Pence has tested negative every single day and plans to be at the White House tomorrow,” Devin O’Malley said.
