Pensacola shooter bought gun legally: report

The gunman who officials say killed three sailors at the naval base in Pensacola, Fla. bought the gun used in the attack legally, CNN reported Sunday. 

Saudi military officer Mohammed Alshamrani, who was identified as the shooter by the FBI, bought the weapon earlier this year from a gun store, a law enforcement source told the news network. Alshamrani reportedly received a hunting license, which permits someone with a non-immigrant visa to own a gun.

Officials are still trying to figure out why the 21-year-old Saudi air force second lieutenant shot into a classroom building, CNN noted. Alshamrani was killed by two deputies, officials said.

Sources also told CNN that Alshamrani does not appear to have connections to terrorist groups. 

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan told CNN that the FBI has seized the Saudi officer’s laptop and phone. 

The victims from Friday’s attack were identified Saturday as Ensign Joshua Kaleb Watson of Alabama, Airman Mohammed Sameh Haitham from Florida and Airman Apprentice Cameron Scott Walters from Georgia.
