Voinvoich clarifies gas tax hike should help transportation funding
After some media reports characterized Voinovich as recommending that those tax dollars be used to pay down the debt, he clarified that he was actually advocating his long-held position that the revenue go toward shoring up federal surface transportation investments.
“The lack of investment in our crumbling bridge, highway, and transit systems is a missed opportunity for the creation of thousands of well paying jobs and long-term economic growth for our Nation,” Voinovich wrote Thursday, echoing a line near the bottom of his longer and broader initial letter to Bowles and Simpson.
“By including robust new funding for a surface transportation bill, Congress can demonstrate that there are fiscally responsible ways to meet our Nation’s needs,” Voinovich added in his follow-up letter.
