News bites: The links between global warming and heavy snow, no bonuses for BP officials, and more
“The U.N. food agency says global food prices rose in February for the eighth consecutive month, and warned that oil price spikes could provoke further increases,” AP reports.
Diplomats are working to implement international climate pacts despite uncertainty about a binding emissions deal in the future.
“Work on recent climate agreements, including a new green fund, will start next month despite wrangling over the future of the Kyoto Protocol, a top U.N. official said on Thursday,” Reuters reports.
“Christiana Figueres, the head of the U.N. climate change secretariat, said the Green Climate Fund as well as the whole work agenda for this year’s U.N. climate talks will be discussed at a ministerial meeting hosted by Mexico in March.”
If you’re a director at BP, overseeing operations that make big mistakes won’t boost your paycheck.
“BP PLC said Thursday it won’t pay bonuses for 2010 to any of its directors who had responsibility for operations in the Gulf of Mexico, where there was a major oil spill, but will pay bonuses to two directors who met specific targets within their divisions,” The Wall Street Journal reports.
“Former Chief Executive Tony Hayward, former head of Exploration and Production Andy Inglis and current Chief Executive Robert Dudley will receive no cash bonus for 2010 and no shares under the long-term remuneration plan running from 2008 to 2010, BP said in its annual report to shareholders,” the piece adds.
