Analyst sees nuclear-power battle lines ‘redrawn’ by Japanese crisis

Southern Co. is planning to build two new reactors in Georgia, and Scana Corp. is planning to build two new reactors in South Carolina. A number of other power companies have applications before the NRC as well.

The Southern Co. and Scana Corp. projects are expected to receive their combined construction and operating licenses from the NRC late this year or in early 2012, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute, the industry’s main trade group.

A top lobbyist for the trade group said its forecast of four to eight new U.S. reactors coming online by 2020 remains unchanged.
