Cameron: Global warming overtakes ‘Skynet’ as threat
Director James Cameron is warning that global warning is a far greater threat to humans than the Terminator.
In a post on Twitter, Cameron said people should be much more worried about the effects of global warming than of machines taking over the earth.
{mosads}“Skynet was supposed to go operational tonight. Instead of machines taking over, we have the very real threat of global warming,” Cameron tweeted Tuesday night.
Skynet is the artificially intelligent U.S. military defense system that winds up waging war against the human race in Cameron’s popular Terminator movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The April 19, 2011, date actually stems from the recent television series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” In the original films, the defense system comes online in early August of 1997 and things go south weeks later when Skynet becomes murderously self-aware.
Cameron has spoken — sometimes colorfully — about the threat of global warming on several occasions, and his smash 2009 film “Avatar” has a clear eco-tinge.
He agrees with scientists who believe that one possible future — indeed, likely future — will bring very dangerous climatic changes absent sharp emissions curbs.
