Dems use royal wedding in effort to tie GOP to oil industry

The invitation is a reference to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, which is slated to take place Friday at London’s Westminster Abbey.

The DCCC blasted Republicans Thursday, including House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), for accepting contributions from the oil industry and supporting billions of dollars in oil industry tax breaks.

Boehner suggested earlier this week he could be open to eliminating some oil industry tax breaks, but his office quickly walked back the comments. The White House and Democrats in Congress pounced on Boehner’s remarks.

Rising gas prices have upped the political rhetoric surrounding oil issues in recent months. Democrats and Republicans alike are pulling out all the stops to score political points on the issue ahead of the 2012 elections.

Republicans, for their part, have called for a dramatic expansion of domestic oil and gas production and have accused Democrats of doing little to address rising gas prices.

President Obama has called for reducing the country’s dependence on oil imports by one-third by 2025, while continuing to drill in the short term and weaning the country off oil in the long term.

Energy analysts say an expansion of drilling in the United States would have little effect on high gas prices.
