Upton: Timeline on EPA boiler rules is inadequate
“The only way to truly stave off the economic and jobs threat of these rules is for Congress to pass legislation giving EPA the time to develop these rules and industry the time to adopt them,” he said.
The EPA said earlier Friday that it would issue final standards in April 2012.
The agency unveiled final boiler rules in April, but halted implementation of the regulations in order to reconsider some parts of the regulations.
Republicans, some Democrats and industry groups have blasted the regulations, arguing they are unrealistic and overly burdensome.
The rules would require that owners of industrial boilers and incinerators install “maximum achievable control technology” to reduce harmful emissions. EPA says the regulations will help prevent thousands of deaths every year.
