Fukushima radiation won’t harm US, official says
Bloomberg reports contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant will the reach the U.S. at safe levels, a US official said.
{mosads}”The highest amount of radiation that will reach the U.S. is two orders of magnitude — 100 times — less than the drinking water standard,” Allison Macfarlane, chairwoman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in Tokyo on Thursday.
“So, if you could drink the salt water, which you won’t be able to do, it’s still fairly low.”
The arrival of the water from the crippled Tokyo Electric Power Co. plant has raised concerns about health impacts.
San Francisco Bay council members passed a resolution on Wednesday calling for more testing of coastal seafood.
The radiation released after the explosions at Fukushima are expected to reach U.S. shores by early 2014.
