Greenpeace activists able to leave Russia

Russian authorities released 14 of 30 Greenpeace members on Thursday, after charges over a protest near an Arctic oil rig were dropped, The Associated Press reports.

The remaining activists and other members should get their exit visas on Friday. They were originally arrested in September after protesting outside a Russian oil rig in the Arctic and spent two months in jail.

The Greenpeace activists said they protested peacefully to bring attention to harmful Arctic drilling. President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would take tougher steps to prevent interference with oil development of the region.
