GOP slams Obama’s new climate fund

Republicans are blasting President Obama’s proposal for a $1 billion climate change “relilience” fund.

They faulted Obama for linking the California drought and other severe weather events to climate change.

“Snow on the grd in 49 of 50 states and POTUS thinks global warming shld be an urgent priority,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) wrote on Twitter.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) said he looked forward to the day where the weather wasn’t used for political leverage.

“In order to push his costly climate change agenda, the President is once again linking extreme weather to climate change — with no scientific support,” Smith said in statement on Friday night. “Drought is a serious problem that should not be used to justify a partisan agenda or a new billion dollar climate change fund.

“I look forward to a day when the weather is no longer used to gain political leverage,” Smith said.

Obama said the fund would be used to help communities dealing with severe weather from climate change. 

He said there is clearly a connection between California’s drought and climate change. Obama in the past has also drawn connections between climate change and severe storms, such as Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
