Owner of railroad in Quebec oil train derailment plans to ship crude again

The new owner of the railroad whose train carrying oil derailed in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, killing 47, plans to ship oil again soon through the town, The Associated Press said.

John Giles, CEO of the Central Maine and Quebec Railway, told AP his company will make $10 million in safety improvement to tracks, but he hopes to ship oil within 18 months, including through Lac-Mégantic. He plans to resume shipping nonhazardous goods this month.

{mosads}Giles’s company bought the United States assets of the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway Thursday. He plans to buy the company’s Canadian assets in the coming weeks.

The company had declared bankruptcy in August after the July incident.

The sale came after the railway and three of its employees were charged with criminal negligence for each person who died in the Lac-Mégantic crash.
