GOP Senate candidate tethered to Kochs in ad

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) is out with a new ad slamming Republican Senate candidate Terri Lyn Land in Michigan over her ties to conservative donors Charles and David Koch.

The ad claims Land has received millions from the Kochs, who stored petroleum coke in Michigan, a product made during the refining of oil.

{mosads}The DSCC said polluton from the pet coke affected seniors and children with asthma.

“Who’s behind this toxic mess,” the ad, titled “Cloud,” states. “The Koch brothers and their giant piles of illegally stored pet coke threatened the health of Michigan residents.”

“And now they’re out to contaminate our elections. Using their dirty profits to prop up Terri Lynn Land, they’ve already spent millions attacking Land’s opponent,” the 30-second ad buy states.

Koch Industries has said it removed the pet coke from the state over one year ago, and claims it does not currently store the product anywhere in Michigan.

Land is facing Rep. Gary Peters (D) in the race for the open Senate seat, which will prove critical in the battle over control of the upper chamber.

The environment has become a key issue in the race, as well as climate change. Peters has repeatedly touted his belief in man-made climate change to distance himself from Land.

Land has said she thinks climate change is happening but said jobs are more important for the state at this time.
