Ukraine, Russia reach gas deal

A natural-gas deal reached between Ukraine and Russia over the weekend could be enough to get Ukraine through the harsh winter this year.

Ukraine, Russia and the European Union made significant progress on the deal, which will be officially finalized by officials in Brussels on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

{mosads}Russia is expected to deliver 5 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of March.

Earlier this year, Russia cut off gas supplies to Ukraine after an agreement could not be reached over Ukraine’s debt and the price Russia was charging for natural gas.

Russia’s energy hold on Ukraine spurred calls in the U.S. for more natural gas exports.
