China targets coal in new energy plan

In a new energy agenda aimed at limiting consumption, China is also targeting coal.

The world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases unveiled a plan that puts a cap on consumption by 2020 to no more than a 28 percent increase from 2013 levels, the Associated Press reports.

{mosads}It also is limiting the growth of coal to 16 percent over the next six years.

The plan comes on the heels of President Obama’s trip to Beijing where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the two announced a deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

It marked the first time China ever put a cap on its carbon emissions, which it said it would stop the growth of by 2030.

Coal is a significant chunk of China’s emissions as it accounts for 65 percent of the country’s total energy consumption.
