India to reveal climate plan by June
India will announce its plans for fighting climate change by June of next year.
The Economic Times reports a member of the Indian delegation said India will not make any emissions reduction commitments to the United Nations during the Lima, Peru talks this week.
“India will finalize and submit [intended nationally determined contributions] only by June,” said Susheel Kumar, the interim head of Indian delegation.
{mosads}The U.N. requested countries submit their intended nationally determined contributions, or INDCs, by March but India claims that deadline is not realistic since there is not template for the contributions.
“These contributions will be comprehensive climate action that India will say it will undertake. It can’t be worked out in a hurry,” Kumar said last week at the Lima climate conference, according to Economic Times.
“Without a template and a decision on what comprises INDCs it is difficult to finalize these,” Kumar added.
There has been some concern over India’s commitment to fighting climate change and whether the country will sign a final treaty aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
U.S. climate envoy for the State Department, Todd Stern, has indicated India could swing either way in negotiations leading up to the Paris talks at the end of next year.
“It’s too early to say where they will position themselves in negotiations,” Stern said of India last month.
“The most important thing for India to see is that there is a path to eradicating poverty and to energy access. They have to see there is a path to get to those fundamental development needs that is as low-carbon as possible,” Stern said.
