The average cost of a gallon of gasoline could hit $2.50 by Christmas, according to AAA.
That means gas prices will likely fall to the lowest level since 2009 in a matter of days, the auto group said.
{mosads}The current national average is $2.67 per gallon, the least expensive since February 2010, thanks in large part to plummeting crude oil prices.
While consumers can bet on seeing prices continue to decline, gasoline isn’t expected to fall below $2 per gallon because the chances of crude oil falling by another $25-$30 per barrel are highly unlikely.
In its short-term outlook released on Tuesday, the Energy Department’s stat shop said to expect the national average to fall to $2.61 per gallon next year.
The Energy Information Administration said it forecast retail gasoline prices for 2015 to average $2.60 per gallon.
